Honorable Mention
Wednesday with Josephine
Dane Hebert

Morrie worried about having his ass wiped. In the end, "It wasn’t all that bad," he said. He thought it would be humiliating when he could no longer perform such a simple task. Having discovered a renewed respect for life, he enjoyed having someone do for him what he could no longer do for himself. That included his daily feedings.

And so it is with Josephine. Almost. Recovering from a stroke, she lost control and use of her hands. She is now in a coma. Some would say it is an argument for euthanasia. After all, her final request on Wednesday, when she was of sane mind and questionable good health, was to die with dignity.

• Society is sickened by the thought of actively assisted suicide.

• A hypocrite’s oath will decide the pull of her feeding tube.

• She will passively be denied water and dehydrate.

• Starve to death within a week.

• It is the legal and moral thing to do.

• Without pain, there is no gain into heaven.
